Explore the sculptural beauty of contemporary Japanese basketmaking. Observe the process of using traditional materials and techniques to create innovative and exciting abstract sculptures. Afterward, visit gallery 177 for the exhibition, "Fired Earth, Woven Bamboo: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics and Bamboo Art” to see more than 60 of the finest dramatic baskets and ceramics, including one by Morigami Jin.

Morigami Jin is one of the most artistically gifted of the younger generation of Japanese bamboo artists. Growing up with parents who were bamboo artisans, Mr. Morigami developed a deep respect and familiarity with the material. He has won numerous accolades for his work. His pieces are the first of a contemporary bamboo artist to be included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Other examples of his bamboo sculptures can be found in the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
