The Heart of Japan: An Evening of Kabuki Dance and Music will present traditional Japanese dance by Ms. Michiko Kurata and Japanese instruments played by Mr. Kaoru Watanabe and Ms. Sumie Kaneko. A sushi reception will follow the performance.

Watanabe, a former member of the Japanese taiko ensemble Kodo, is a practitioner of various Japanese transverse bamboo flutes, taiko drum, as well as the Western flute.  He has an international reputation for the soulful beauty of his flute and taiko.

Kaneko is a Japanese koto and Shamisen player, as well as a world music singer-songwriter and producer.  She studied Koto and Shamisen at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. She accompanies her instruments with voice for the Kabuki dances.

The performance will be preceded by a workshop on March 11, 5:00 PM-6:30 PM in the Alumnae Hall Ballroom. All are invited for a hands-on exploration of the Japanese instruments featured in the March 12 performance.
