Did you know that you can experience a complete traditional Japanese house in the Boston Children's Museum? As the Japan Program Educator at the Museum, Akemi Chayama creates programs and takes care of the Japanese House exhibit. Come learn from Akemi Chayama about the history of the exhibit, its significance to Boston, and the future work of the Museum in teaching about the Japanese culture and community!

Brief Background of the Japanese House Exhibit

The building was a gift from the City of Kyoto to the City of Boston on the 20th Anniversary of their sister city relationship in 1979. The 100-year old house was carefully reconstructed piece by piece at the Museum. Stepping inside, visitors can learn about Japanese family life, customs, architecture, and more!

Over the years, the Japanese House exhibit has played an important role in the City of Boston. For example, after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, it became a space where the entire community could gather to share thoughts and prayers for the people of Japan. This year - 2019 - is the 60th Anniversary of the Sister City relationship between the City of Kyoto and the City of Boston. The Boston Children's Museum will be a key player in contributing to continuing the rich friendships and traditions of the two cities.
