年賀状 Decorate a Nenga-jyo Japanese New Year’s Greeting Card!

December 11 - December 31, 2017

Boston Children's Museum, Japanese House,
308 Congress St., Boston, MA 02210

A nenga-jyo is a New Year’s greeting postcard. Japanese people send these to their relatives, friends, and colleagues as the first greeting of the New Year. People usually prepare and drop off their nenga-jyo cards in the mailbox before December 25th.  All the nenga-jyo cards are stored in the post office until New Year’s Day and on the morning of January 1st, they are delivered to everyone all at once.  Nenga-jyo have a variety of messages, such as wishes for a happy New Year, New Year’s resolutions, and more.  Often they include an illustration of the zodiac animal of the coming year.

Year of 2017 is Year of the Rooster.  How about 2018?  It is Year of the Dog!

In the Japanese House, visitors are invited to learn about the custom of nenga-jyo – Japanese New Year greeting cards – and create their own. Are you ready to celebrate the New Year?

During the busy days, they will have the guided tours of the Japanese House to accommodate the crowds. During the busy times, they will not have the activity in the Japanese House in order to accommodate the crowds.

Japanese House has limited hours. Please check the specific hours on the day of your visit.
