Explore how contemporary tattoo artists incorporate the dynamic compositions and intricate designs of 19th-century Japanese woodblock print artists in their creations. Using markers and tracing paper, tattoo artist Mike Shea demonstrates how he creates Japanese-inspired images for his popular tattoos. Afterwards, visit “Showdown! Kuniyoshi vs. Kunisada” to enjoy 100 works by these print superstars.

Michael Shea is an owner of Redemption Tattoo in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has been a tattoo artist for more than 20 years.
