Perspective on Nature in the Arts of Japan

Free Webinar

SPONSOR: Primary Source
TIME7:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. EST
DATE: Dec. 6, 2016

While much commentary exists on the way that nature is represented in Japanese art, relatively little attention has been paid to the role of nature in the physical materials of that art. The medium of wood, for example, helped define almost every aspect of traditional Japanese artistic production and, in some ways, has set Japanese art apart from the art of other East Asian cultures. In this webinar, Professor Yukio Lippit of Harvard University will explore the significance of wood in Japanese architecture, sculpture, and prints, and discuss the ever-evolving relationship between ecology and the arts of this island nation.

Open to all, particularly designed for educators
